Pivot Suspension Setup

Setting rear shock sag on Pivot mountain bikes:

Always set sag with the Pro Pedal turned off (lever set to the non-drive side of bike). Sit on the bike (preferably with hydration pack on) and sit down hard into the saddle to overcome the anti-squat and achieve an accurate sag setting. Once sitting motionless in the saddle, slide the O-ring up into position against the air can. Once the O-ring is set in place, slowly step off the bike so as not to move the O-ring. Add or remove air as required to set the sag to the recommended setting shown below.

We recommend 30% sag on our frames. Running less will only result in a bike where the rear end rides high and the front end feels loaded up. Too much sag will relax the geometry and put the suspension more into the progressive part of the stroke faster. 30% will give you a nice balanced feel. (Different models and sizes of Pivot bikes use different length shocks and therefore require different sag settings. In general, we are setting sag at 30% of the shock stroke)

1. Mach 4 XX-Small and X-small: Sag = .45” or 11.4mm

2. Mach 4 Small, Medium, Large, X-large, Mach 429 sm, md, lg and Mach 5 X-Small and Small: Sag = .6” or 15.24mm

3. Mach 5 Medium and Large: Sag = .65” or 16mm

Why no Propedal?

Riders used to riding other designs may be surprised that they do not need to have the Pro Pedal on when riding a Pivot to have a very efficient, controlled and bob free ride. Try the Pivot (or any bike that you are riding for the first time) in the most active setting and experiment from there.

Rear Shock Settings:

In general, rebound should be turned all the way out (fastest rebound) and dialed back in 1-3 clicks depending on rider weight. A sub 145lb rider is full out (fastest setting) where a 200lb rider would be 3 clicks in. Average is 1 click in on a Mach 4 or 429 and 2 clicks in on a Mach 5. Start out with the Pro Pedal turned off (lever set to the non-drive side of bike). For RP23 shocks, the Pro Pedal we always like to start off with the Pro Pedal ON cam set to 1(light Pro-Pedal). This gives a nice distinction between Pro pedal ON and Pro Pedal OFF. Some racers on the Mach 4 or 429 might use Pro Pedal #2 on a smooth race course, but it’s not as good for general riding.
